European Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica, commended Egypt’s pivotal role in ensuring stability in the Middle East during a phone call with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Monday.

Šuica highlighted Egypt’s constructive contributions to regional peace, describing it as a cornerstone of stability in the region. The discussion focused on enhancing cooperation, particularly in the Mediterranean, and emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between Egypt and the European Union (EU).

Minister Abdelatty reiterated the significance of fostering collaboration based on principles of sovereignty, peace, security, and international law. He underscored that increased cooperation would benefit both Egypt and the broader Mediterranean region.

The conversation also touched on Egypt’s growing relationship with the EU, particularly following the landmark agreement in March 2024 to establish a comprehensive strategic partnership. Under this partnership, Egypt is set to receive €7.4 billion in EU funding through 2027. Abdelatty stressed the importance of accelerating the disbursement of this financial support, including the first €1 billion tranche and securing the approval for the subsequent €4 billion installment from the European Parliament.

Additionally, Abdelatty highlighted the outcomes of the Egyptian-European Investment Conference held in June 2024 in Cairo, which led to the signing of 29 agreements worth nearly €49 billion, and called for the activation of these agreements to further strengthen bilateral cooperation.
