Egypt’s Minister of Social Solidarity, Dr. Maya Morsy, visited the under-construction Dr. Abla El-Kahlawy Hospital for Alzheimer’s and Elderly Care, the first of its kind in Egypt, the Arab world, and Africa dedicated solely to Alzheimer’s disease and geriatric care.
The hospital, operated by the Al-Baqyat Al-Salihat Association, a member of the National Alliance for Civil Development Work, is in its final stages of preparation and is expected to open soon.
Landmark Facility for Specialized Elderly Care
The minister toured the hospital to assess the progress of medical equipment installation and construction works, praising the high standards of infrastructure and readiness she witnessed.
“This is a milestone in specialized healthcare for the elderly,” Dr. Morsy stated. “The hospital reflects the strong partnership between the civil society and the state in delivering high-quality, integrated services to vulnerable groups.”
A Regional First: Alzheimer’s-Focused, NGO-Operated
Dr. Marwa Yassin, Chairwoman of the Al-Baqyat Al-Salihat Association and a board member of the National Alliance, emphasized the hospital’s regional significance: “This is the first specialized hospital in Egypt, the Arab world, and Africa run by a civil society organization, designed to meet global standards in geriatric and Alzheimer’s care.”
Spanning 7,876 square meters, the six-story facility is equipped with 100 inpatient beds. Its layout includes:
- Ground floor: Emergency intake, observation, radiology, outpatient clinics
- Upper floors: Intensive care, pain management, wound care, therapeutic nutrition, and specialized Alzheimer’s and geriatric units
The hospital will also include a consultative diagnostic unit for early detection, a wound management center, and teams specializing in geriatrics, neurology, psychiatry, and clinical nutrition.
Raising the Bar in Elderly Healthcare
Dr. Ahmed El-Fiqi, CEO of Al-Baqyat Al-Salihat, stressed that the hospital aims to deliver comprehensive, multidisciplinary services tailored for the elderly:
“The facility is built to international standards, housing advanced medical equipment and led by top-tier specialists in Alzheimer’s, gerontology, and neuropsychiatry. We’re creating a safe and effective healing environment that improves quality of life for both patients and families.”
Government–Civil Society Collaboration in Action
In this regard, Morsy reaffirmed that this hospital represents the evolving role of Egypt’s civil society in addressing critical health challenges.
“This project exemplifies the strategic integration of civil society into national healthcare efforts, particularly in serving groups like the elderly and Alzheimer’s patients who require specialized, long-term care.”
Accompanying Delegation
Dr. Morsy was joined by a senior delegation, including Eng. Margaret Sarofim, Deputy Minister, Ayman Abdel Mawgoud, Permanent Undersecretary, and Dr. Marwa Yassin, Chairwoman of Al-Baqyat Al-Salihat. This is addition to Dina El-Sirafy, Advisor for International Cooperation.
Premium Geriatric Care
As Egypt grapples with a rapidly aging population, the need for specialized elderly care facilities has become urgent. The Dr. Abla El-Kahlawy Hospital is a pioneering step toward addressing this demographic shift with dignity, science, and compassion.
