Egypt’s Civil Aviation Ministry Implements Rapid Contingency Plan to Restore Full Operations at Cairo Int’l Airport Following Network Outage

Mona Yousef

Egypt’s Ministry of Civil Aviation announced the successful implementation of alternative contingency measures to overcome a sudden telecommunications and internet disruption that affected the country in recent hours. The swift response ensured a full restoration of operations at Cairo International Airport, with all flights departing on schedule and systems across all passenger terminals fully recovered.

In an official statement, the ministry confirmed that it worked in close coordination with national authorities and telecom partners to mitigate the impact of the outage, which was caused by a major fire at a central telecom hub in downtown Cairo on Monday. The fire disrupted essential digital infrastructure, affecting multiple critical services nationwide.

Coordinated Emergency Response Ensured Operational Continuity

Despite the severity of the outage, the ministry emphasized that airport systems—including passport control, security screening, flight information displays, and automated passenger announcements—were restored within hours.

Specialized technical teams were deployed on-site and worked round-the-clock to implement backup systems and reroute digital traffic to unaffected nodes. The rapid response helped minimize delays and preserved the integrity of airport operations during a peak travel period.

Resilience Amid National Infrastructure Disruption

The outage occurred amid widespread national disruptions caused by the fire at the Ramses Central Telecom Building, which temporarily disabled portions of Egypt’s internet and mobile networks. Financial institutions, transportation systems, and airport services were among the sectors impacted.

Despite the challenges, Cairo International Airport resumed normal air traffic movements without major disruptions, reinforcing Egypt’s growing aviation sector resilience in the face of unforeseen infrastructure shocks.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation commended the dedication of emergency teams and confirmed that it is continuing to review and enhance its disaster recovery protocols and technological redundancies to safeguard critical airport functions.
