Egyptian octogenarian swimmer, Nagwa Ghorab,  secured a remarkable silver medal at the World Aquatics Masters Championship in Qatar on Saturday. At the age of 81, Ghorab showcased her indomitable spirit and exceptional skills in the Women’s Masters 50m freestyle event, clocking an impressive time of 47.88 seconds.

In the fiercely contested race, the 80-year-old Sevigny Lanthier Madelei from Canada won the gold medal, as he finished with a remarkable time of 37.69 seconds. Ghorab’s awe-inspiring performance stands as a testament to her unwavering determination and relentless pursuit of excellence.

The World Aquatics Masters Championships, Doha 2024, is underway in Qatar, from 23rd February to 3rd March 2024. The event serves as a platform for seasoned athletes from around the world to showcase their skills and compete at the highest level.

Nagwa Ghorab’s journey in the world of swimming is nothing short of extraordinary. Born in Damanhur, Egypt in 1943, she first made waves as a champion swimmer for Egypt at the tender age of 14. However, due to the lack of opportunities at the time, Ghorab was compelled to retire from competitive swimming.

Reflecting on those challenging times, Ghorab shared her sentiments with The National, stating, “It was a challenging time for me.  I am a competitive swimmer in the water. I only feel happy when a strong competitor is next to me so I can surpass them.”

Undeterred by the hiatus in her swimming career, Ghorab made a triumphant return to the sport in her sixties. Her unwavering belief that age is merely a number fueled her determination to challenge the odds and prove that nothing is impossible. Ghorab’s inspiring words serve as a beacon of hope for anyone aspiring to achieve greatness, as she declared, “I challenged my age. I challenged the difficulties to prove that nothing is impossible. Anyone who desires to achieve something can make it happen.”
