Buckle up because the African Queen is ready to unleash her wizardry with the Wilson at the Astara Stop in Soraya Mohamed’s much-hyped debut on the FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series.
All eyes on May 20-21 will be on 27-year-old Soraya, who might just be the best women’s player in Africa having led Egypt to gold medals at the FIBA 3×3 Africa Cup in 2019 and 2022, according to the “Fiba Basketball” website.
In the 2019 event, Soraya emerged as a superstar and natural-born entertainer to walk off with the MVP after an insane 48 points, including 8 in the final against two-time Africa Cup winners Mali.
She proved to also be an assassin in the clutch after burying an unbelievable step-back 2 with 15 seconds to clinch Egypt the title.
Right there and then, Cleopatra had to make way for Soraya who was the new queen of Egypt.
After an absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the wait was worth it with Soraya once again unleashing her deep bag at Africa Cup 2022 to walk off with another gold medal and finish as the equal leading scorer.
Now it’s time for her to showcase her electrifying game to the world as the 5ft. 8in (1.72m) Soraya will lead a strong Egypt team in Astara.
No.8 seeds Egypt are in a tough Pool A against top seeds Germany and Ukraine but will be confident of getting out of Day One. Their hopes will rest on Soraya, who has so far in her career always risen to the occasion.
This will be her biggest challenge against the best in the business with Soraya testing her sublime skills against powerhouses Germany led by towering Sonja Greinacher, the No.2 ranked women’s player in the world.
There is the tantalizing possibility of Soraya matching up against other walking buckets – such as China’s scoring machine Lili Wang – but that’s all still to play out.
One thing is for certain – Soraya Mohamed is absolutely box office and ready for a lights-out performance on the big stage.
