In a grand cultural celebration, Egypt’s Ministry of Culture has announced 2025 as the official “Year of Umm Kulthum,” marking the 50th anniversary of the legendary singer’s passing. The announcement emphasizes the pivotal role Umm Kulthum played in shaping the soul of the Arab world, highlighting her as an eternal symbol of Egyptian and Arab artistry.

Minister of Culture’s Tribute to Umm Kulthum

Dr. Ahmed Fouad Henein, the Minister of Culture, expressed immense pride in Umm Kulthum’s legacy. He referred to her as “a symbol of Egypt and the Arab world,” noting her exceptional role in representing Egypt’s history, culture, and heritage. “Her voice transcends generations, and she remains a beacon of Egypt’s rich musical history,” Dr. Henein remarked. He added that Umm Kulthum was not only a musical icon but also a cultural ambassador who spread messages of love and peace to the world.

Dr. Henein also revealed the Ministry’s vision for this yearlong celebration, which aims to preserve her enduring musical heritage for future generations. “This is more than a remembrance of the past; it is a call to inspire the future with the same artistic spirit and creativity that Umm Kulthum embodied,” he stated. The Minister further emphasized Egypt’s ongoing commitment to remaining a beacon of high art and musical innovation.

Global and Local Celebrations

To honor this musical legend, the Ministry has outlined an extensive calendar of events that will span the entire year, beginning with major concerts, exhibitions, and competitions. The celebrations will include global performances, such as a concert in Paris by the “Arabic Music Orchestra” conducted by Maestro Alaa Abdel-Salam. This event will take place at the prestigious Philharmonie de Paris, reaffirming Egypt’s position at the forefront of global music.

Locally, Egypt’s cultural institutions will host a series of concerts and festivals across the country. The Cairo Opera House will kick off the celebrations with two special performances on February 9 and 16, as part of the “Kalthoumiat” series, featuring renowned singers and orchestras. The Ministry has also announced a nationwide talent search to discover young voices with the potential to carry on Umm Kulthum’s legacy.

Umm Kulthum Music and Singing Festival

A key part of the celebration will be the “Umm Kulthum Music and Singing Festival,” organized by the General Authority for Cultural Palaces. This festival, which begins on February 3 in Umm Kulthum’s hometown of Tamay al-Zuhayra in Dakahlia, will celebrate the legacy of the beloved singer. The festival will include film screenings, workshops, and exhibitions showcasing her life and music.

One of the highlights will be a concert by the “Mansoura Arab Music Ensemble,” paying homage to her legendary contributions to Arab music. As the festival continues, other governorates will also host musical performances, including in Alexandria, Tanta, and Sohag, ensuring the spirit of Umm Kulthum reaches every corner of Egypt.

Special Exhibitions and Free Access to the Umm Kulthum Museum

In addition to live performances, cultural institutions will host exhibitions dedicated to Umm Kulthum’s legacy. The National Library and Archives will present rare photographs and historical documents detailing her career. The Umm Kulthum Museum in the Manial district of Cairo will also open its doors for free throughout February, offering visitors a closer look at her personal items, including her famous dresses, sunglasses, and letters.

Cultural and Educational Programs for the Next Generation

The celebrations will also include a host of cultural and educational programs aimed at inspiring future generations. Workshops, musical performances, and seminars will be held in various cultural centers across Cairo and Alexandria. These activities will provide young audiences with the opportunity to engage with Umm Kulthum’s music and learn about her impact on the world of art and culture.

The Ministry of Culture has also planned workshops for children at the “Child Creativity Center” to introduce them to Umm Kulthum’s timeless music through interactive and creative activities.
