Egyptian female athletes have made history at the Special Olympics World Winter Games Turin 2025, playing a pivotal role in Egypt’s remarkable medal haul. Their achievements, particularly in cross-country skiing, a sport Egypt debuted in, underscore the nation’s growing prowess in winter sports and the dedication of its female athletes.
Dr. Maya Morsy, Minister of Social Solidarity, received a report from the Central Administration for Persons with Disabilities, detailing the Egyptian Special Olympics team’s success. Notably, it was the women who significantly contributed to the nation’s medal count, securing both a gold and a bronze medal.
Radwa Abu Saree delivered a standout performance, earning a bronze medal in the 100-meter cross-country skiing race for women. Her achievement marks a historic moment for Egyptian female athletes in winter sports. Meanwhile, in the same event, Mohamed El Nakash clinched the gold medal for the men’s race, contributing to the team’s overall success.
This marks Egypt’s first-ever participation in cross-country skiing, making Abu Saree’s bronze medal a landmark achievement that adds to Egypt’s Special Olympics legacy. The success of Egyptian female athletes in a sport traditionally dominated by other nations demonstrates their determination and skill.
“We are incredibly proud of Egypt’s three medals, especially considering this is our first time participating in cross-country skiing and snowshoeing,” said Engineer Hany Mahmoud, President of the Egyptian Special Olympics. “The success of our female athletes is a testament to their strength and perseverance.”
He added, “This achievement reflects the immense effort put in by the athletes and coaching staff during the preparation period. It proves that Egypt can excel even in winter sports. We will continue to support our athletes to achieve further success in this competition, and we thank everyone who contributed to this achievement.”
Further demonstrating the team’s overall strength, Iman El Shafei secured sixth place in the 25-meter snowshoeing race, while Norhan Osman achieved fifth place in the snow skiing event. While not a medal, these strong placements show the depth of talent within the Egyptian delegation.
