Egypt Ratifies $9.9 Million Grant Agreement with Canada for Climate-Smart Agriculture Skills Development

Mona Yousef

Egypt has officially ratified a $9.9 million Canadian grant agreement to support the “Egypt Green Skills for Climate-Smart Agribusiness Network” project, a new initiative aimed at enhancing climate-resilient agricultural capabilities and promoting sustainable development in the agri-business sector.

The decision was published in Egypt’s Official Gazette on Thursday under Presidential Decree No. 567 of 2024, marking the final step in the formal approval of the agreement signed between the Government of Egypt and the Government of Canada.

The Egyptian House of Representatives had previously approved the agreement during its session on January 12, 2025.

Strengthening Green Skills and Sustainable Agriculture

The $9.9 million CAD grant will fund a comprehensive capacity-building program focusing on the development of green skills tailored to climate-smart agriculture. This includes training for farmers, entrepreneurs, and agri-workers on sustainable practices, advanced irrigation systems, climate-resilient crop selection, and smart farming technologies.

The project aims to build a climate-resilient agribusiness network, particularly among youth and women in rural areas, and to support Egypt’s transition toward a low-emissions, climate-adaptive economy in alignment with Egypt’s Vision 2030 and international climate commitments.

Canada-Egypt Development Cooperation

This grant underscores Canada’s continued support for Egypt’s green transformation and inclusive development agenda. Over the years, Canadian development aid has targeted sectors such as education, gender equality, economic empowerment, and climate adaptation.

The new project builds on previous bilateral cooperation efforts, positioning agriculture as a strategic pillar for climate action and economic resilience.
