Egypt’s Health and Population Minister, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, met with officials from the National Population Council (NPC) to explore ways to develop collaborative, unconventional solutions to the overpopulation problem.
Abdel Ghaffar stated that the political leadership places a significant importance on the National Project for the Development of the Egyptian Family (NPDEF), which is part of the government’s efforts to secure a decent life for everyone in the country.
According to Ministry Spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the meeting focused on overpopulation-related issues, including school dropout, early marriage, and child labour.
At the end of the meeting, Abdel Ghaffar directed the bodies involved to pursue any healthcare personnel discovered to be participating in the practise of female genital mutilation (FGM), according to the spokesperson.
According to the Planning and Economic Development Ministry, the NPDEF is a comprehensive development project, not just focusing on boosting family planning and the health sector but covering five pillars, including the economic empowerment of women.
Launched by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi in February 2022, the project is the cornerstone to address the overpopulation crisis out of a comprehensive vision including the health, social, family and economic dimensions. It is also a project that focuses on the family as a social building block, rather than simply people, in contrast to past projects that solely concentrated on women
The project is aimed at ladies aged 18 to 45 from school and university students, children from villages and rural regions, religious men, preachers, and nuns.
