Egypt may soon become Africa’s biggest wind generator replacing South Africa

Egypt might soon become Africa’s greatest wind generator, unseating South Africa as the continent’s top wind generator by 2030, according to energy columnist Gavin Maguire who wrote for Reuters, citing data from Global Energy Monitor.

Furthermore, Maguire predicts that South Africa will drop to the 28th top wind energy producer in the world, from the 25th now, allowing Egypt to climb to the 25th position.

By 2030, Egypt might be the continent’s top wind generator, followed by Morocco and Algeria.

Moreover, Saudi Arabia looks set to be the largest wind power producer in the Middle East once it raises current capacity by 125% to 900MW

It is worth mentioning that Egypt’s wind power generation jumped 13% y-o-y in 2022 to 6.1 GWh, and there’s more to come with private companies currently constructing or developing some 2.8 GW of fresh wind capacity, while the government is set to add 252 MW of wind capacity in the Gulf of Suez.

Meanwhile, East Asia is set to remain the top wind power production region thanks to a project development pipeline that will expand current wind power capacity by 65% by the end of 2030, according to data from Global Energy Monitor (GEM).

However, Maguire went on saying that wind power generated around 7.8% of worldwide electricity in 2022, but it has to grow to create 21% of global electricity by 2030 if net-zero emissions targets are to be met, according to think tank Ember.

Such aggressive expansion targets mean that the recent breakneck development pace must be maintained or surpassed annually for the rest of the decade, and be distributed throughout the world’s largest power consuming regions.
