Egypt Launches Region’s First Vector Control Field Epidemiology Training Programme with WHO Support

Mona Yousef

Ensuring regional health security, the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Office in Egypt, in collaboration with Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population, has launched the Middle East and North Africa’s first Field Epidemiology Training Programme (FETP) dedicated to vector control. Backed by financial and technical assistance from the Pandemic Fund, the initiative marks a significant milestone in the fight against vector-borne diseases in the region.

This new training program is part of a broader effort to strengthen Egypt’s — and by extension, the region’s — capacity to detect, prevent, and respond to diseases transmitted by vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas. These diseases, including dengue fever, West Nile virus, and leishmaniasis, are becoming increasingly prevalent amid climate change and shifting ecosystems.

One Health in Action: Bridging Human, Animal, and Environmental Health

At the core of the program is the One Health approach — an integrated strategy recognizing the interconnection between people, animals, and the environment. The training brings together 32 participants, predominantly agricultural engineers working across the human and animal health sectors. Their goal: to build a robust, multisectoral workforce capable of managing outbreaks with scientific precision and cross-sectoral collaboration.

“This initiative is a strategic advancement not only for Egypt but for the entire MENA region,” said a WHO Egypt spokesperson. “By focusing on vector control, we’re addressing one of the most significant and growing public health threats.”

Hands-On Learning, Grounded in Science

Unlike traditional epidemiological education, the FETP model emphasizes field-based experiential learning. Over six months, trainees will participate in three intensive workshops, each followed by rigorous fieldwork assignments in diverse governorates across Egypt. The program dedicates 80% of the curriculum to field engagement, ensuring that participants apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios where vector-borne threats are most acute.

A recent training session included a live demonstration where participants designed tools for vector surveillance and disease control — an exercise that underscored the program’s commitment to innovation and applied learning.

Building on Egypt’s Legacy in Field Epidemiology

This new program builds on Egypt’s longstanding commitment to epidemiological training. Since its inception in 1993, the Egypt FETP has graduated 385 field epidemiologists and operates across basic, intermediate, and advanced levels. WHO Egypt has consistently provided technical mentorship, updated training materials, reviewed scientific outputs, and supported the logistical needs of the program.

“The current training program elevates Egypt’s role as a public health leader in the region,” said Dr. Naeema Al Gasseer, WHO Representative in Egypt. “It’s a testament to the country’s proactive stance on emerging health threats.”

Pandemic Preparedness Starts on the Ground

Vector-borne diseases are projected to rise globally, driven by factors like urbanization, international travel, and climate variability. Strengthening the workforce to combat these threats is critical to global health security and epidemic preparedness.

With the successful implementation of this specialized FETP, Egypt is not only enhancing its national disease response capacity but also laying the foundation for a more resilient, adaptive health system.

As health threats grow more complex and interconnected, Egypt’s new training program serves as a model for regional cooperation, workforce development, and innovative public health practice.
