Egypt has launched the fourth phase of the presidential initiative “100 Million Trees” in Suez Governorate, aiming to expand green spaces, reduce pollution, and improve urban air quality, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Local Development.

Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment, announced the start of the new phase, underscoring the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability and climate resilience across all governorates.

The initiative will see the planting of 5,040 trees along major roads and key traffic corridors in Suez, part of a nationwide effort to enhance Egypt’s urban landscape and support the transition toward sustainable development.

Scientific Planning and Data-Driven Monitoring

A report submitted to the minister by Dr. Saeed Helmy, Head of the Strategic Management and Local Development Sector at the ministry, confirmed that planting operations have already begun across several major axes in the governorate.

Awad stressed the importance of applying rigorous scientific standards when selecting planting locations and tree species to ensure long-term environmental sustainability. She also directed officials to establish a comprehensive database documenting, coding, and tracking all newly planted trees to ensure proper follow-up and maintenance.

Reducing Pollution and Improving Urban Life

“The ‘100 Million Trees’ initiative plays a vital role in reducing pollution levels, improving air quality, and enhancing the urban environment in Egyptian cities,” Awad said, according to the ministry’s statement.

She highlighted ongoing coordination among the Ministries of Local Development, Environment, and Agriculture to expand green coverage nationwide, reflecting a unified government approach to environmental protection.

Regular Oversight to Ensure Success

The minister emphasized the need for continuous monitoring by relevant ministry sectors to assess progress during the current phase and ensure the initiative’s success. Maintaining and protecting newly planted trees, she said, is essential to achieving the maximum environmental and social benefits of the project.

The “100 Million Trees” initiative is one of Egypt’s flagship environmental programs, aligning with national climate goals and international sustainability commitments.
