In a bold move toward modernizing healthcare and expanding equitable access, Egypt’s General Authority for Healthcare (GAH) has officially launched the “Care at Home” project, a comprehensive home-based medical care initiative aimed at delivering efficient and high-quality healthcare directly to patients in their homes.
Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairman of the Authority, described the initiative as a strategic shift toward a more inclusive, patient-centered healthcare model that reaches people wherever they are—particularly the elderly, people with chronic illnesses, and persons with disabilities.
“A New Era of Human-Centered Healthcare Delivery”
The project marks a significant pivot away from the traditional facility-bound model of care. Instead, it offers customized in-home services that include family medicine, nursing care, physical therapy, and long-term support for chronic and geriatric patients. Future expansions are planned to introduce mental health services and post-operative recovery at home.
“This is not just a service; it’s a philosophy of care,” said Dr. El-Sobky. “Our model puts the human first. ‘Care at Home’ is a major leap toward integrated, universal health coverage that respects patients’ dignity and improves their quality of life.”
Smart Health Mobility
Currently active in Port Said and Ismailia, the program is part of Egypt’s broader Universal Health Insurance System, and will gradually expand to other governorates.
The project is powered by expertly trained medical teams operating under strict clinical protocols, ensuring that every home visit upholds high safety and quality standards. These teams are equipped with “Home Care Cars”—smart medical vehicles loaded with the latest diagnostic and emergency tools to respond swiftly and professionally to each case.
Early Success and Seamless Access
During its pilot phase, the “Care at Home” teams completed over 2,000 home visits, with a response time of within 48 hours, and same-day service for urgent cases.
Patients can currently request services through Family Medicine Centers affiliated with the GAH. In the coming weeks, a dedicated hotline (15305) will be activated, offering a direct communication channel for scheduling home visits, medical consultations, and case assessments.
Available for All — Insured or Not
Importantly, the “Care at Home” services are available to all citizens, whether enrolled in the national health insurance scheme or not. The Authority emphasizes that this reflects its broader mission to build trust, promote healthcare equity, and set a replicable model of care that prioritizes dignity and accessibility.
