Egypt Halts Evacuating Nationals from Wadi Seidna Air Base in Sudan For Security Reasons
Due to security reasons, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced suspending the evacuations from the Wadi Seidna Air Base, north of Khartoum, Sudan.
The ministry called upon the early evacuation of the Egyptian ex-pats from the base as early as possible and to head to one of the three areas: the Egyptian Consulate in Port Sudan, the Qastal border crossing, and the Arqin border crossing.
Earlier, the ministry announced a change in the assembly points where Egyptian citizens are evacuated from Sudan. In a statement, the ministry announced the new assembly points: the Egyptian Consulate General in Port Sudan and the border crossings of Qastal and Arqin.
According to the ministry, its crisis management room continues to receive phone calls from the citizens at home and abroad around the clock. A total of 1.072 Egyptians out of 6.399 since the beginning of the crisis in southern Sudan have returned to Egypt safely.
The Ministry’s spokesperson, Ahmed Abu Zaid, said in a statement that 454 Egyptian nationals were evacuated on land and 618 via airplanes.
Since the clashes started between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) last week, Egypt has been calling for consolidating a ceasefire in Sudan and ending hostilities. Coincidingly, the Egyptian Armed Forces organized nine flights on Thursday with a total of 23 flights.
