On December 9, 2024, a key meeting in Cairo explored Egypt’s circular and green economy opportunities. The Egyptian Ministry of Environment, the Federation of Egyptian Industries (FEI), and the Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) co-organized the event under the Swiss Sustainable Recycling Industries (SRI) project. More than 70 government officials, private sector recyclers, industry leaders, and financial institutions attended the event at the JW Marriott Hotel.
Focus on Recycling and Waste Management
The event aimed to identify opportunities for growth within Egypt’s circular economy, particularly in recycling and waste management. The circular economy emphasizes minimizing waste and maximizing resource use, which aligns with Egypt’s sustainability objectives. Through the event, participants discussed how these sectors could become a major driver of economic growth and environmental protection.
Swiss-Egyptian Collaboration
The meeting highlighted the collaboration between Egypt and Switzerland under the SRI project. Switzerland’s experience in sustainable recycling, particularly its approach to electronic waste (e-waste), offers valuable lessons for Egypt. Experts discussed Switzerland’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system, where manufacturers are responsible for managing the lifecycle of their products, including recycling.
Addressing Key Challenges
A feasibility study presented at the meeting focused on challenges like lithium batteries and hazardous plastic waste. These materials complicate recycling efforts, but with the right systems in place, Egypt could successfully repurpose them.
Green Financing Models and Best Practices
Discussions also covered green financing models, which are essential for growing the circular economy in Egypt. Panelists presented successful case studies and shared innovative approaches to funding sustainable projects. Financial tools such as green bonds and impact investing can help raise capital for eco-friendly initiatives, making sustainability economically viable.
Financial institutions were encouraged to play a crucial role in supporting green projects, which can drive significant private sector involvement in Egypt’s recycling and waste management sectors.
Strengthening Stakeholder Collaboration
The event emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders. Government agencies, the private sector, and financial institutions must work together to create an integrated recycling and waste management system. This collaboration is key to building a circular economy in Egypt and supporting sustainable growth.
This meeting marked a significant step toward Egypt’s circular economy goals. The Swiss-Egyptian partnership, along with proven models, could help Egypt become a leader in sustainable practices in the region. With the right policies and partnerships in place, Egypt can leverage its position to drive green innovation, recycling, and economic growth.
The SRI project continues to guide Egypt in its transition to a circular economy, offering the potential for a more sustainable future.
