Egypt Elected Deputy Chair of WHO’s 70th Eastern Mediterranean Regional Committee

Egyptian Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar was elected deputy chair of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 70th session Eastern Mediterranean Regional Committee (RC70), as per a statement from the Ministry of Health and Population.

The 70th session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean is scheduled for October 9-12, 2023, at the WHO Regional Office in Cairo.

Joining him in leadership roles are Ali Haji Adam Abukar from Somalia as Chairperson and Ahmed Robleh Abdullah from Djibouti as another Deputy Chairperson.

The officials were elected during a meeting of the regional committee on Monday.

At the meeting, the chairperson expressed gratitude to the elected deputies for their efforts in improving regional health, according to the ministry statement.

Tedros Adhanom, WHO’s director-general, and Ahmed Al-Mandhari, director of the WHO’s Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, attended the event along with ministers, ambassadors from member states, and international organization representatives.

At the meeting, Adhanom praised Egypt for eradicating Hepatitis C after previously having one of the highest infection rates in the world.

Additionally, he highlighted notable advancements in primary healthcare services within the region and urged countries to prioritize healthcare protection, particularly for women, infants, and children.

The event aims to improve healthcare outcomes by addressing trauma-related morbidity and mortality, and by promoting primary healthcare models, clinical guidelines, and strategies to combat vector-borne diseases.

It also seeks to enhance collaboration through the Regional Health Alliance to achieve health-related Sustainable Development Goals.
