Egypt Condemns Israel’s Formation of Agency for Forced Displacement of Palestinian civilians from Gaza

Mona Yousef

Egypt has condemned Israel’s recent announcement regarding the establishment of an agency aimed at forcibly relocating Palestinians from Gaza. The move, alongside Israel’s approval of 13 new settlements in the West Bank, has drawn sharp criticism from the Egyptian government, which emphasizes the grave violation of international law and humanitarian principles.

Egypt’s Official Statement

In an official statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt expressed its deep concern over Israel’s actions, particularly the creation of a new agency designed to facilitate the forced displacement of Palestinian civilians. Egypt categorically rejects Israel’s claim of “voluntary departure” of Palestinians, deeming it a mere pretext to justify the continuation of unlawful practices. The statement highlights that the forced movement of civilians amidst bombings, military aggression, and the systematic obstruction of humanitarian aid is not voluntary but a clear case of forcible displacement, a violation of international law.

Forcible Displacement and War Crimes

Egypt’s Ministry emphasized that the situation in Gaza, compounded by ongoing military strikes and blockades, leaves Palestinians with no option but to flee under duress. Under these circumstances, any action that involves the displacement of civilians is tantamount to forced migration and constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law, making it a war crime. Egypt urged the international community to take immediate and decisive action in response to these continuing provocations by Israel.

Call for International Action

In its statement, Egypt called on the international community and the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to act with urgency in denouncing these Israeli actions. Egypt urged the international body to stand firm in enforcing international law, ensuring the protection of Palestinian rights, and calling for the cessation of illegal Israeli activities.

The Egyptian government reiterated its unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, emphasizing the right of Palestinians to self-determination and to the establishment of an independent state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. Egypt also reiterated the importance of adhering to United Nations resolutions and international agreements that uphold the rights of Palestinians.
