Egypt Celebrates Earth Day 2025 with Focus on Renewable Energy and Sustainable Practices

Mona Yousef

Egypt is joining the global community in celebrating Earth Day 2025, marked annually on April 22, with this year’s theme, “Our Power,  Our Planet.” The celebration calls for worldwide cooperation to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy and aims to triple global clean electricity generation by 2030. In alignment with the global goals, Egypt’s Ministry of Environment has launched a series of events to raise environmental awareness and foster sustainable practices, highlighting Egypt’s ongoing commitment to protecting the planet from environmental degradation and climate change.

Ministry of Environment’s Initiatives for Earth Day 2025

Dr. Yasmin Fouad, Egypt’s Minister of Environment, announced that the Ministry is hosting several initiatives and events to mark Earth Day. These include social media campaigns aimed at promoting environmental awareness, as well as organizing seminars, workshops, and clean-up campaigns in schools, universities, and cultural centers. Additionally, tree planting efforts are being carried out to encourage sustainable environmental practices and reinforce the importance of preserving natural resources.

Dr. Fouad emphasized the significance of Earth Day as an opportunity to reaffirm that environmental protection is a shared responsibility. She underscored the need for collaboration between the government, civil society, private sector, and citizens to achieve sustainable development. “Sustainable development can only be achieved through collective action and continuous awareness,” she remarked, stressing the vital role of youth in driving the future of environmental sustainability.

Egypt’s Commitment to Renewable Energy

In her address, Dr. Fouad also highlighted Egypt’s steadfast commitment to renewable energy as part of the country’s overarching goals for sustainable development. Egypt has made significant strides in expanding the use of clean electricity, particularly through solar and wind energy projects. Among the most notable initiatives is the Benban Solar Park in Aswan, one of the largest solar power plants globally, which reflects Egypt’s leadership in renewable energy adoption.

The Ministry of Environment is working in close collaboration with relevant authorities to incorporate environmental considerations into national energy policies. Dr. Fouad pointed out that the Egyptian government is actively encouraging private sector investment in clean energy projects, contributing to reduced emissions, improved air quality, and a balanced approach to economic growth and environmental protection.

Innovative Solutions for Waste-to-Energy Projects

As part of Egypt’s efforts toward a green economy, the Ministry is also placing a strong emphasis on waste-to-energy technologies. Dr. Fouad explained that Egypt is pursuing sustainable solutions for waste management by converting waste into energy, which not only addresses the challenge of waste disposal but also provides an alternative source of clean energy. The Ministry is collaborating with the Ministries of Electricity, Local Development, and relevant bodies to implement waste-to-energy projects across the country. These projects are already in motion in various governorates, including Giza and Gharbia, where dedicated facilities are being established to convert municipal solid waste into electricity.

She also noted that the Ministry has introduced incentive tariffs for purchasing electricity generated from waste, encouraging investors to enter this vital sector and support the transition to a circular economy.

Egypt’s National Climate Change Strategy 2050

Further highlighting Egypt’s environmental achievements, Dr. Fouad referred to Egypt’s National Climate Change Strategy 2050, which is designed to reduce carbon emissions, improve climate adaptation, and promote sustainable economic growth. This strategy emphasizes supporting the most vulnerable groups impacted by climate change, ensuring that the country’s transition to a low-carbon economy benefits all sectors of society. The Ministry is also pushing for green projects and facilitating green finance to accelerate the transition toward a sustainable, resilient economy.

The Global Significance of Earth Day

Earth Day, celebrated globally since 1970, remains a pivotal event for raising awareness about environmental issues and promoting actions to protect the planet. This year’s theme, “Our Strength is Our Planet,” aligns with Egypt’s continued commitment to environmental stewardship and its active participation in the international community’s efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable practices.

Dr. Fouad concluded by reiterating Egypt’s strong commitment to playing a leading role in the global effort to combat climate change, emphasizing the importance of collaborative action to safeguard the planet for future generations.
