Egypt, in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), successfully concluded a landmark workshop focused on enhancing women’s land tenure security across the African continent. Held from December 10-12 in Sharm El-Sheikh, the event gathered representatives from 22 African nations, underscoring the collective commitment to addressing gender inequalities in land rights.

Strengthening Women’s Land Rights: Egypt’s Role

Dr. Alaa Ezzou, Head of the Agricultural Extension Sector in Egypt, emphasized Egypt’s dedication to promoting gender equality in land tenure during the workshop. He highlighted the importance of inclusive governance in agriculture and broader development efforts across Africa. Egypt’s involvement, he explained, reflects its pivotal role in UNECA’s mission to foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing among African countries to achieve sustainable development goals.

Dr. Ezzou also outlined Egypt’s recent achievements in advancing gender equality, particularly in political participation. Women’s representation in parliament has significantly increased, thanks to quotas designed to ensure equitable participation. In addition, Egyptian women have taken on high-level roles, including as ministers, governors, and deputy ministers, marking notable progress in the country’s pursuit of gender equality.

Addressing Challenges in Women’s Land Tenure

The workshop sessions provided a comprehensive overview of the current status of women’s land rights across different African regions, including West, Central, North, East, and Southern Africa. Key challenges identified during discussions included entrenched customary traditions, legal gaps, and gender-based power dynamics, all of which impede women’s ability to secure access to land.

Participants acknowledged that addressing these challenges requires innovative, context-specific solutions. These solutions must respect local traditions while ensuring that women’s rights to land are recognized and protected by law. The workshop also emphasized the need for effective governance models that prioritize gender equity in land ownership and use.

A Regional Approach to Sustainable Development

In response to the identified challenges, participants proposed a regional approach to land tenure reforms that would prioritize women’s land rights as a key component of broader goals such as food security, climate resilience, and economic empowerment. They emphasized the need for targeted policy changes that reflect the diverse land tenure dynamics within the African continent.

Additionally, the workshop underscored the importance of robust monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. These systems would track the progress of land tenure reforms and measure their impact on women’s lives, ensuring accountability and long-term success.

Empowering Women for a Sustainable Future

The successful conclusion of the workshop and Egypt’s active role in driving discussions signal a broader movement to empower women across Africa. By addressing the critical issue of land tenure, the workshop aims to create lasting change that will enable women to fully participate in agricultural and community development. As African nations continue to advance gender equity in land rights, these efforts are expected to contribute significantly to the continent’s sustainable development goals.

The partnership between Egypt and UNECA reflects a shared vision for empowering women and promoting equitable development throughout Africa. By tackling the challenges women face in securing land rights, this initiative lays the groundwork for a more inclusive and prosperous future for African communities.
