Could modesty be the new trend? Cannes 2025 reveals
As the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival kicks off today, May 13, and runs through May 24, organizers have announced a new set of rules governing red carpet attire. The festival has officially banned revealing outfits deemed to expose more than they cover — a move aimed at upholding standards of decency and respect during the event, following criticism of what were seen as inappropriate fashion choices in recent years.
According to an official statement from the festival’s management, guests will no longer be permitted to wear dresses that expose sensitive parts of the body. Voluminous gowns and long trains have also been prohibited, as they obstruct foot traffic and complicate seating arrangements near the stage.
Reception teams have been instructed to deny entry to anyone not adhering to these guidelines. The updated policy also includes broader directives on public behavior and promotes a generally more modest dress code.
