Cairo University and Roche Diagnostics Unveil State-of-the-Art Clinical Pathology Laboratory at Al-Manial University Hospital

Mona Yousef

Cairo University Hospitals, in partnership with Roche Diagnostics, have officially inaugurated a fully automated clinical pathology core laboratory at Al-Manial University Hospital. This major upgrade marks a new era in precision medicine, efficiency, and academic excellence in the region.

The advanced facility is now Egypt’s fifth fully automated laboratory, and one of the largest and most sophisticated diagnostic hubs in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

A Leap Forward in Diagnostic Speed and Accuracy

The newly inaugurated lab is equipped with Roche’s Total Lab Automation (TLA) solutions, allowing test results—once taking several hours—to be delivered in under two hours. The laboratory will handle over 36.7 million tests annually, serving nearly 2.5 million patients from across Cairo University’s expansive network, which includes 17 hospitals and specialized centers with a capacity of more than 5,200 beds.

This development significantly boosts the hospitals’ ability to deliver faster, more accurate diagnoses, particularly in critical care and emergency medicine, where time is often the defining factor in patient survival and recovery.

A Two-Decade Strategic Partnership

The inauguration also marks a significant milestone in the over 20-year partnership between Cairo University and Roche Diagnostics, aimed at modernizing and digitizing Egypt’s healthcare infrastructure.

“Together, we are delivering a fully automated diagnostic system that represents the future of healthcare in Egypt,” said Dr. Lilian Kanaan, General Manager of Roche Diagnostics Egypt. “This lab is a testament to the power of innovation and collaboration in transforming patient care.”

Egypt’s Historic Medical Giant, Poised for the Future

Prof. Mohamed Abdelsadek, President of Cairo University, paid tribute to the university’s rich medical legacy while celebrating its future-forward advancements.

Prof. Hossam Salah, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of Cairo University Hospitals, noted the lab’s role in ensuring reliable, high-quality diagnostics and reaffirmed the university’s mission to remain a regional leader in medical innovation.

Fully Integrated Automation System

The clinical pathology lab is built on Roche’s cutting-edge automation platforms, covering a broad range of testing disciplines including:

  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Immunoassays
  • Hematology
  • Urinalysis
  • Coagulation Studies

This fully integrated system automates every stage of the lab workflow—from sample reception to post-analytic reporting—minimizing human error, particularly in the pre-analytical phase, which accounts for more than 60% of lab errors globally.

“We are witnessing a qualitative leap in diagnostic medicine, with a system that links every stage of the lab process,” said Dr. Nesreen Elgharabawy, Head of Clinical Pathology at Cairo University Hospitals.

Dr. Marwa Meshaal, Deputy Executive Director for Medical Affairs and Emergency Services, emphasized the direct clinical impact: “Time is critical in emergency settings. With this lab, our physicians will receive results in under two hours, dramatically improving treatment decisions, patient outcomes, and survival rates.”

National Hub for Research and Training

Beyond diagnostics, the facility will serve as a national center for research, training, and innovation, offering hands-on education for physicians, lab technicians, and healthcare professionals across Egypt.

Diagnostic Excellence in Egypt

The lab will also contribute to advanced research in cancer, rare diseases, and chronic illnesses, placing Cairo University Hospitals at the forefront of scientific progress and medical education.

This milestone underscores the strength of public-private partnerships in advancing Egypt’s healthcare agenda. With the unveiling of this cutting-edge facility, Cairo University Hospitals and Roche Diagnostics have set a new benchmark for diagnostic excellence in Egypt and the region, paving the way for a smarter, faster, and more patient-centered future in healthcare.
