AUC hosted the UN-Habitat’s inaugural edition of biennial World Urban Campaign Assembly on November 6, featuring researchers, academics, students, urban planners, policymakers and NGOs who will engage in discussions on the future of urban planning.
The World Urban Campaign Assembly serves as a significant convening of urban development stakeholders, comprising policymakers, academics, urban professionals and civil society organizations. It is an annual event taking place in parallel with milestones events, particularly in parallel to the biennial World Urban Forum. This assembly is hosted by the American University in Cairo (AUC) during the 12th edition of the World Urban Forum (WUF12).
The primary objective of the WUC Assembly 2024 is to draw on the results of the activities run by the coalition in the past year, in particular the outcomes of the #HousingMatters thematic campaign and the Egypt Urban Campaign towards WUF1
Capitalizing on the World Urban Forum, the AUC’s commitment to urban sustainability is evident in its multidisciplinary approach. Further, initiatives such as the Cairo Bike project and sustainable construction in Siwa demonstrate AUC’s dedication to real-world solutions.
The university’s collaboration with international institutions, such as Sorbonne University, highlights its global impact. By fostering international partnerships and knowledge exchange, AUC is contributing to the global discourse on urban development.
Beyond academic pursuits, AUC is actively involved in public engagement and advocacy. The public talk by Carlos Moreno, a renowned urbanist, showcased the university’s commitment to raising awareness about sustainable urban planning. Additionally, AUC’s participation in the World Urban Forum provided a platform for showcasing the work of its faculty, students, and alumni on a global stage.
As Egypt continues to urbanize rapidly, AUC’s role as a catalyst for sustainable urban development is more crucial than ever in shaping a more sustainable and equitable future for Egyptian cities.
