The League of Arab States issued a statement, on the occasion of World Intellectual Property Day, under the slogan “Women and Intellectual Property: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity”, in celebration of creative women and entrepreneurs and to support their innovations and creativity to contribute to building a sustainable knowledge economy all over the world.
Women are equal to men and deserve equal access to all the tools needed to innovate and produce traditional knowledge for economic, social, and cultural development.
The Arab League added that women make up half of the world’s population, but they face various challenges in benefiting from the intellectual property system.
That’s why the celebration of World Intellectual Property Day 2023 is an opportunity to encourage women to make optimal use of the intellectual property system to protect their creativity and achieve gender parity in the field of intellectual property to provide more creativity worldwide.
The statement also stressed that women in the Arab region have made remarkable progress in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship, according to some international and regional classifications, and therefore several awards were allocated to women working in the field of innovation and scientific research regionally and internationally.
The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States works to advance the conditions of women in the Arab region and combat all forms of violence and discrimination against them, and attaches great importance to issues of empowering women in the Arab region in the economic, social, and cultural fields.
It also seeks concerted efforts towards achieving gender equality within the framework of implementing the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals by adopting many initiatives and decisions.
The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States took this opportunity to extend its congratulations to all government officials of intellectual property offices in the Arab countries, especially the women working at the head of these offices, who are members of the Technical Committee for Intellectual Property.
The committee formed under a decision from the Economic and Social Council at the ministerial level in 2016, consists of government officials for copyrights and related rights offices, patent offices, trademarks, and industrial models. This committee is tasked with setting rules for cooperation in the field of intellectual property for the Arab region.
