Egypt is set to observe daylight saving time this year. On Friday, April 26, the clock will be set forward by an hour from midnight on Thursday. It is planned to be in effect until the last Thursday of October, which is October 24, 2024.
According to the Electricity Ministry, a study shows that daylight saving time will save up to $25M by reducing the number of gas units used in electricity production. Generally, a one percent reduction in electricity consumption saves around $150 million annually.
It is worth mentioning that daylight saving time was first implemented in Egypt in 1940, but it has been suspended multiple times and reinstated on April 28, 2023.
Daylight saving time was reintroduced in Egypt last year after being approved by the Egyptian Cabinet. The Cabinet believes it has numerous benefits, such as reducing energy consumption, particularly in light of the world’s changing economic conditions.
