Today in Alexandria, a workshop titled “Appropriate work environment for both sexes” was introduced in collaboration with the ILO Cairo Office and the Ministry of Labor.

A number of labor, safety, occupational health, employment, and labor relations inspectors from ten Egyptian governorates will participate in the five-day workshop.

The objectives of the workshop are to: improve labor inspectors’ understanding of gender equality and gender discrimination; examine the operations of the Ministry of Labour’s Gender Equality Unit; consider suggested amended conduct and laws prohibiting workplace violence and harassment; and instruct labor inspectors on the application of the manual on gender equality in the workplace.

In his introductory remarks, Eric Ochlan, the Director of the ILO Office in Cairo, emphasized the significance of collaboration between the ILO and the Egyptian Ministry of Labor to uphold women’s employment and address workplace violence and harassment.

ILO supported the Egyptian Ministry of Labour in women’s economic empowerment by funding projects such as the Joint Programme to Promote Productive and Appropriate Work for Women in Egypt, Jordan and Palestine.

Mohamed Kamal, Undersecretary of the Labour Directorate of Alexandria and Head of the Gender Equality Unit, confirmed that the Egypt is adopting policies aimed at women’s political, economic and social empowerment, adding that the workshop is part of the Ministry of Labour’s desire to create a safe and just work environment for all and to provide equal employment opportunities for men and women.
