Alana Hadid, a fashion designer, model, and older half-sister of supermodels Bella and Gigi Hadid has recently launched a film production and distribution company called Watermelon Pictures.
Watermelon Pictures serves as an independent film label owned by Palestinians in hopes of creating a platform for underrepresented filmmakers from all over the world, focusing on cultural representation and social advocacy.
The company’s website outlines its mission to amplify the voices of those often marginalized in the film industry. Watermelon Pictures aims to shed light on narratives that have long been overlooked while promoting creative resistance as a powerful tool for social change.
Watermelon Pictures has recently released its first project, a documentary called “Walled Off”. The film explores the story of the Walled Off Hotel, a unique establishment located in Bethlehem that faces directly toward the Israeli West Bank barrier wall. The hotel was financed and conceptualized by the well-known British street artist Banksy and serves as a symbol of artistic defiance against political oppression.
The production of the documentary involved a collaboration of notable figures, including American-Palestinian model and musician Anwar Hadid, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters, known for his outspoken political views, and Kweku Mandela, the grandson of the iconic South African leader Nelson Mandela. Alana Hadid’s brother was also part of the team.
Alana, the Creative Director of Watermelon Pictures, expressed her vision for the company, stating that their goal is to provide a safe haven for excluded voices striving for creative resistance. Through their film releases, they aim to educate and inspire audiences worldwide to stand up against injustice.
Watermelon Pictures is a film company that not only supports social advocacy but also celebrates Palestinian culture as an essential part of its brand identity.
The company’s statement emphasizes the richness and resilience of Palestinian heritage, represented by the iconic fruit that shares its colors with the Palestinian flag.
As Watermelon Pictures embarks on its journey to highlight diverse narratives and encourage meaningful dialogue, its initiatives are a significant step towards inclusivity and representation within the global film industry.
