On Wednesday, February 19, 2025, the “Tawfeer” Medical Industries Company, headed by Ahmed Al-Azaby, signed a cooperation protocol with the Chinese company “Mindray” to establish Egypt’s first plant dedicated to the production of ultrasound devices. This new venture marks a significant milestone in local medical manufacturing.

In a meeting with representatives from both companies, Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Egypt’s Minister of Health and Population, underscored the strategic importance of this partnership in enhancing the domestic medical device industry. The collaboration aims to meet the growing demand for advanced medical devices within the Egyptian healthcare sector, with a particular focus on achieving self-sufficiency in ultrasound devices and reducing dependency on imports.

The first locally manufactured ultrasound device is expected to be produced by April 2025, with plans to reach an annual production capacity of 2,500 units. Additionally, specialized training programs will be offered to Egyptian technicians and engineers to ensure knowledge transfer and the mastery of cutting-edge technologies.

Dr. Abdel Ghaffar emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to providing all necessary support to encourage investment in Egypt’s healthcare sector and attract global companies to transfer manufacturing technologies for medical equipment and supplies. He highlighted that locally produced, high-quality medical devices at competitive prices would contribute significantly to improving the quality of healthcare services available to Egyptian citizens.

In turn, Hisham Abu Steit, Head of the Unified Procurement Authority, hailed the partnership as a pivotal step toward achieving self-sufficiency in medical equipment and ensuring the availability of high-quality products for the healthcare sector. He affirmed that the Authority would offer full support to this project, working to overcome any challenges and strengthen local manufacturing capabilities.
