The German University in Cairo (GUC) is proud to announce that Dr. Florian Ashraf Issac, a graduate of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biotechnology, has been awarded the esteemed “Prix Solennel de Thèse de la Chancellerie des Universités de Paris.” This prestigious recognition, awarded by the Paris University Chancellery, celebrates some of the best doctoral theses in the field of pharmacy, with Dr. Issac becoming the first Egyptian to receive this honor.
Dr. Issac’s groundbreaking thesis, titled “Targeted Nanoparticles for mGlu Receptor Modulation as Innovative Therapeutics for Schizophrenia,” addresses the development of novel treatments for schizophrenia, a chronic and severe mental disorder that significantly affects a person’s thoughts, emotions, and behavior. The condition often leads to auditory hallucinations, such as hearing voices that are not present, and is commonly classified as a form of psychosis. This makes both its diagnosis and treatment a significant challenge for medical professionals and researchers.
Her research focused on the use of computational technology to analyze and design nanoparticles aimed at specifically targeting receptors in the brain, particularly mGlu receptors, as a means of developing more effective therapies for schizophrenia. By leveraging advanced computer technology, Dr. Issac’s work aims to not only discover new therapeutic compounds but also to eliminate undesirable drug properties such as poor absorption or low efficacy.
The German University in Cairo congratulated Dr. Issac on her exceptional achievement, noting that she began her postgraduate journey in France, specializing in drug design using computational technologies. These technologies offer numerous benefits, including the ability to identify promising new drugs while eliminating those with undesirable characteristics.
Dr. Issac’s groundbreaking work places her among the forefront of international research in the field of pharmaceutical sciences, marking a significant contribution to the global efforts to better understand and treat complex psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia.
