About Me

Computer scientist, technologist, entrepreneur and business leader, Rana el Kaliouby believes that “humanizing technology gives us a golden opportunity to re-imagine how we connect with machines, and, therefore, how we connect with each other.” Co-founder and CEO of Affectiva, the pioneer of Emotion artificial intelligence, el Kaliouby invented the company’s award-winning emotion recognition technology. The Emotion AI platform combines facial expression and tone of voice to infer how a person is feeling, using deep learning and the world’s largest emotion data repository of more than five million faces, analyzed from 75 countries. Prior to founding Affectiva, el Kaliouby was a research scientist at the MIT Media Lab where she spearheaded applications for facial coding to benefit mental health, autism, and other research areas. el Kaliouby is one of few women leading a disruptive AI company. A Muslim-American and passionate advocate, she frequently speaks in press and on stage, about innovation, women in technology, ethics in AI, and leadership. Fortune Magazine recently included Rana in their 2018’s 40 under 40 list. She also received Smithsonian magazine’s 2015 American Ingenuity Award for Technology. Moreover, el Kaliouby is a Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum and a Member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. el Kaliouby received a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the American University in Cairo and a PhD in Computer Science from University of Cambridge.
